Bronze. Green patinated standing figure of a Royal Air Force pilot looking skyward, drawing on a gauntlet, and wearing B-type flying helmet with C-type mask, Sidcot flying suit, seat parachute harness and flying boots. Raised on an integral plinth modelled with Pilot Wings and the ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’ in relief. Signed and dated T.J.Burns 1941.

Thomas Jones Burns (1888-c.1950) was an Edinburgh based sculptor who went into partnership with William Donaldson. In 1927 Donaldson and Burns collaborated with Alice Meredith Williams in carving the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle. T.J. Burns exhibited almost annually at the Royal Scottish Academy and in 1942 exhibited ‘R.A.F.’
