Painted wood cut out fitted verso with iron bracket and tin drip tray. Inscribed to the reverse ‘2nd Life Guards’.
 
Inspired by the tromp l’oeil figures that became fashionable in 17th and 18th century England and the Netherlands, our officer of appears to be the work of military artist Richard Simkin (1850-1926). This silent sentinel wears the uniform of 1808- 1812 when the Life Guards exchanged their biocornes for the Grecian style helmets they worn at Waterloo.
