Pen and ink on silk. A chaplain at divine service in the field, piled before him, an altar of drums stacked upside down on the ground; to his left a group of drummer boys, and to his immediate right a Guardsman at ease with his musket in the reversed arms position. Behind the chaplain several ranks of Guardsmen in bearskin caps form the backdrop to several groups of officers left and right of the celebrant. Of these the field officer to the chaplain’s right, with folded arms and wearing a great coat, bearskin, and high boots, appears the dominant figure, and thus most probably the commanding officer. Huts and tented encampment beyond, populated with lurking bashi-bazouks. Silk: 24cm (9.5in) x 35.5cm (14in). Mount with  Framed and glazed.
