Sculpted in 1940 by Ernest Bailey, a principle designer at the Burgess and Leigh’s Middleport works in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent during the 1930s and 40s. Following the introduction of restrictions on the manufacture of non-essentials, Bailey’s design continued to be produced but in plain white ‘utility ware’. The base of the jug bears the impressed legend: ‘We shall defend every village, every town and every city. Churchill Premier 1940’
