A First World War Allies Desk Top Box, 1914
Measurements: 19.5cm (7.7in) x 9.5cm (3.7in) x 6.7cm (2.8in)
£875
Silver plate. Rectangular box, the hinged lid cast in relief with a design by R. Caton Woodville (1857-1921) of British infantry overrunning a German field gun beneath the concluding lines from Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘All That We Have And Are’ - ‘Who stands if freedom falls, who dies if England lives’. The sides cast with portrait busts of George V, Albert I, King of the Belgians, the President of France, Edward, Prince of Wales, King Nicholas I of Montenegro, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, King Peter I of Serbia, and Emperor Taishō of Japan.
Kipling’s patriotic poem ‘All That We Have And Are’ was published in the Times in 1914 to promote recruitment and used, as in the case of this box, to help raise funds for war charities.
