Silver mounted glass claret jug, inscribed ‘Presented to Captain G.M. Hamer by his Brother Officers 14th/20th Hussars on his marriage / 19th July 1924’. The cover surmounted by the Prussian Eagle, holding sceptre and orb in its talons, in silver. Maker’s mark of Walter & Charles Sissons. Hallmarked Sheffield 1924.

The Prussian Eagle badge was awarded to The 14th Light Dragoons by Crown Princess Frederica of Prussia in 1798, after escorting her from Dover to London, prior to her marriage to Frederick, Duke of York.

Major G.M. Hamer, 14th/20th Hussars, was the son of Mr Meredith Hamer of Elmhurst Hall, Lichfield, Staffordshire. He entered the Army in 1913 and was wounded in Mesopotamia where he served from November 1915 until March 1917. After the war he was successively Adjutant of the of the 14th/20th Hussars and the Staffordshire Yeomanry.
