Sampangi Raj won the Indian Order of Merit 2nd Class whilst a Company Havildar Major
with 12th Field Company Queen Victoria's Own Madras Sappers & Miners in the Middle East in 1941 (London Gazette: 18 July 1941). As a Viceroy’s Commissioned Officer In 1943 he further distinguished himself in the Eighth Army’s attack on the Mareth Line while serving with 12th Field Company, Q.V.O. Madras Sappers & Miners under Major J.A. Cameron (qv)
