Silver gilt portrait medallet within a gold border, mounted on a 14 carat (tested) gold pin. Memorial stickpin presented by Queen Victoria. The obverse cast and chased with the portrait bust of highland ghillie and servant John Brown in relief, betwixt the initials ‘J.B.’ and over the year of his death ‘1883’, the reverse engraved ‘From / VRI’ in cypher form, for Victoria Regina Imperatrix. Cased.

The present stickpin was commission by Queen Victoria (1819-1901) to commemorate the death of her faithful servant. The Queen further commissioned a Brown memorial brooch with the late ghillie’s head to one side and the Royal monogram on the other. It was designed by Victoria for presentation to her Highland servants and cottagers to be worn by them on the anniversary of Brown’s death, with a mourning scarf.
