Exhibited: Napoleon et son Temps, Rouen, 1934

A finely cast and chased patinated bronze head and shoulders bust of Napoleon I after Antoine Denis Chaudet (1783-1810), the official sculptor to the Premier Consul and Imperial family from 1802. On integral bronze sole raised on a cylindrical antico rosso marble plinth mounted on sienna marble base. The underside of the base bearing fragmentary remains of the catalogue ‘Napoleon et son Temps Exposition, Musee de Peinture de Rouen du 19 Mai Au 15 Juillet 1934’.

The present bronze dates to the return of Napoleon I’s mortal remains from St Helena to France in 1840.
