Provenance: Ex Edgar Goble Collection, 1891

Cast iron. Relief bust of the national hero facing left after John de Vaere’s profile portrait of 1798 for Wedgwood. Depicted in admiral’s full dress uniform with decorations, hair en queue. Mounted in a fitted open frame.

Nelson enthusiast Edgar Goble of Fareham, Hampshire loaned several items to the 1891 Royal Naval Exhibition, held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. An example of this multi-rayed star burst portrait in lead is in the National Maritime Museum, as is another version brass that was purchased by the Caird Fund. Variously dated between 1805 and 1825 these star burst profile portraits relate to the earliest period of commemoration of Admiral Lord Nelson.
