Engravings heightened with watercolour and applied decoration.

The present portraits may be classified as ‘tinsel pictures’. Such were produced in the 1840s for embellishment at home by the middle-class hobbyists who hand-coloured the images and adorned them with strips of coloured paper and the pieces of pressed metal decoration to reflect the light. More commonly tinsel pictures featured popular heroes, heroines and villains of the stage played by famous thespians of the day.
