H.R.H. Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn Silver Table Snuff Box, 1938

Measurements: 14cm (5.5in) x 8.5cm (3.4in) x 4cm (1.75in)



Silver and silver gilt. Of rectangular form with reeded side panels, engine turned base, the lid applied with the coronet and conjoined ‘AW’ cypher of Prince Arthur within an engine border, the top and bottom edges with foliate mounts. The gilded interior inscribed on the lid ‘Charlotte Haskins from Arthur Xmas 1938’ Maker’s mark of the Royal warrant holder Henry Hodson Plante, of Bury Street, St. James’s, London. Hallmarked 1937.

Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (1850-1942), the third and favourite son of Queen Victoria, who married Princess Louise Margaret Alexandra Victoria Agnes of Prussia (1860-1917), the third daughter of Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia in 1879. Prince Arthur enjoyed a distinguished military career, commanding a division in the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882 and rising to the rank of Field Marshal. He was Governor General of Canada during the First World War He was nursed in his last years at his home Bagshot Park, Surrey by Charlotte Haskins (1897-1965).
