Silver cigarette case with rose gold borders and engine turned decoration, the centre applied with the arms of the Maharaja of Jodhpur as borne by His Highness Sir Umaid Singh. (Arms: barry of five, a kite rising argent, and on a canton three heads of millet paleways, slipped, proper. Crest: a demi-lion rampant proper. Supporters: Two kites rising. Motto in sanskrit: Rana Banka Rathor (Rathor gallant in a battle). Gilt interior. Maker’s mark of Adie Bros. Hallmarked 1936. Contained in modern presentation case.

Maharajah Sir Umaid Singh of Jodphur, G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., K.C.V.O. (1904-1947) succeeded his elder brother Maharaja Sir Sumair Singh in 1918 as head of the Rathore clan of Marwar and as the ruler of a progressive kingdom. He ruled under the regency of his great uncle until 1923 when he was formally invested by the Viceroy Lord Reading. In 1922 he served as Aide-de-Camp to the Prince of Wales during his visit to India and the following year embarked on the construction of the Umaid Bhawan Palace bringing much needed employment to his people. In 1925 Umaid Singh brought his all-conquering polo team to England giving rise to a golden age of domination by teams from Rajasthan. The Maharajah, who held the rank of Lieutenant-General in the British Army, was also active in business, a pioneer of commercial air travel and a reformer of his state’s military and administrative affairs.
