Silver. In the form of a figure of Mercury the Roman God of communication, financial gain, commerce, eloquence, travellers, luck, trickery and thieves; the keeper of boundaries between the upper and lower world, with winged heels, and holding in his left hand the caduceus as the wand borne antiquity’s herald, the whole poised on a globe. Mounted on an ebonised columnar base applied with a presentation plaque inscribed ‘Presented To Major W.M. Knight, T.D, Royal Corps of Signals, By His Brother Officers on his Retirement 13.2.30 / Good Luck Billy / 56th (1st London) Div. Signals T.A, / L of C Signals S.R.’ Maker’s mark of Goldmsiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd., 112 Regent Street, London. Hallmarked London 1930. Height of figure: 18cm (7in)
William Marriot Knight was a pre-war Territorial soldier in the 8th (City of London) Battalion (Post Office Rifles) and became Company Sergeant Major, before being commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Signal Company, 1st London Divisional Engineers in July 1915.
