Royal Horse Guards - A Victorian Officer’s Helmet and Cuirass

1871 Pattern Officer’s helmet of German silver, the skull applied with a white metal eight pointed hobnail Garter star, overlaid on a gilt mount in form of sprays of oak and laurel leaves, centered on the Garter motto, ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Pense’, in gilt over a blue enamel ground, surrounding a cross of red enamel, the whole complete with gilt side  rosettes, brass chin scales and white horse hair plume. The steel cuirass with brass studded edging, the interior with red leather lining, and maroon velvet edging, brass shoulder scales with cut steel studs terminating in lion mask bosses.
