Major Horabin (1925-2008) enlisted into the South Lancashire Regiment in 1940; joined the band as an oboeist; became battalion boxing champion, and was the youngest Band Sergeant in the Army. He graduated from Kneller Hall with distinction in 1954 and was appointed bandmaster of the 7th Queen's Own Hussars. Commissioned in 1961, he became Director of Music, Royal Engineers Aldershot. In August 1968 he was appointed Director of the Irish Guards band in succession to Lt-Col C.H. Jaeger, OBE. From 1974-77, Major Horabin was Senior Director of Music, Guards Division.
