The combination of boater and Brigade of Guards stripe picture frame suggest a possible connection for this portrait with The Brigade of Guards Boat Club, that was for a hundred years a glamorous social hub at Maidenhead and a notable part of the story of British amateur rowing. With its heyday in Edwardian era, the BGBC clubhouse was the scene of annual Ascot Week balls, that were important society occasions, and firm fixtures in the London social season. In 1932, The Times reported that. ‘The Prince of Wales, the Duke of Gloucester, and Prince George honoured the Guards Boat Club Ascot Ball with their presence…. There were over 600 people present’.
