Sepia print studio portrait by Bertram Park of Edward, Prince of Wales, later Edward VIII (1894 - 1972) in uniform as Colonel-in-Chief of the Seaforth Highlanders. Signed lower right on the image in the Prince’s hand ‘Edward P / Col in Chief / 1933’. Signed in the mount in pencil Bertram Park.

Bertram Park (1883-1972) was noted for stylish and beautifully composed portrait studies more often relied on dramatic lighting than on elaborate backgrounds. He set up studios on Dover Street, London after the First World War and was in great demand in the 1920s and 30s. He photographed the British Royal Family, and his reputation was such that various European crowned heads would come annually to his studio to be photographed. An alternative version of the present image showing the Prince facing the other way with arms folded was reproduced as a popular postcard.
