Measurements: 8cm (3.2in) x 11.5cm (4.5in) x 15cm (6in)

A large hoof from a 1st Life Guards charger adorned with silver plated shoe and mount inscribed - ‘BLACKFRIAR / Joined 1st Life Guards 1871 / Died 1886’.

Blackfriar (1871-1886) was no doubt a cavalry black, the Irish horse breed favoured by the Household Cavalry. His dates of service encompass the famous Moonlight Charge made by a composite unit of the Life Guards and Royal Horse Guards at Kassassin Lock, during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882.
