Silver. A George V Tribute vesta case engraved 'Bridekirk Parish, Lieut J. Hayton M.C. Border Regt. 1914-18. Maker’s mark of George Unite & Sons. Hallmarked Birmingham, 1919.
A pipe smoker Hayton was a Temporary Lieutenant serving on the Western Front when on New Year’s Eve 1916, he led a patrol into No Man’s Land and won the Military Cross (LG 3.3.1917). The regimental history relates 'on New Years eve a patrol of three went out under Second-Lieutenant J. Hayton and came suddenly face to face with two of the enemy. Young Hayton's revolver had slipped round his belt and he was unable to draw it, but with ready presence of mind he 'drew' his pipe and pointed it threateningly at the head of one of the enemy who murmured 'Kamerad', put up his hands and was taken prisoner ...'
