30cm (12in) x 22cm (9in)
Silver mounted calamander, silk lined. A 60th Rifles officer's book form blotter, the Indian calamander front applied with a King’s Royal Rifle Corps Officer’s helmet plate of the 1878-81 pattern, the back cover of blue morocco, and interior containing sheets of blotting paper.
In the 19th century an informal tradition was established whereby the silver elements of a retired officer’s uniform were repurposed as domestic objects with a practical purpose. The Crown Jeweller Garrard, Royal Stationer Walter Jones of Sloane Street, and Vickery of Regent Street number among the prestigious London firms that carried out this bespoke work.
