Provenance: ‘This velvet was among the Articles purchased by the Earl of Shrewsbury at the sale of Napoleon's effects in Paris belonging to the palace of the Tuileries - .…’ 

Fragment of red velvet from the Emperor's Closet in the Tuileries Palace, secured by a pin to a manuscript paper recording provenance, inscribed in ink in period hand, circa 1830, ’Supposed to be a piece of the velvet that hung on the wall of Napoleon's favourite room (the Emperor's Cabinet).’ Size of velvet: 5.5cm x 10cm. Note: 15.7cm  x 11.4cm. Framed and glazed with a 19th century photographic print of the Emperor to the reverse.

John, 16th Earl of Shrewsbury is known to have bought an extensive collection of paintings from Napoleon’s mother Madame Marie-Letitia Napoleon in 1829 in a single lot.
