Three quarter length seated self-portrait of Surgeon Major Johnson Savage MD, Royal Artillery. Signed and dated 1887. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInspector General Johnson Savage MD (1804-1883) trained at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and at Edinburgh University. He entered the Army as Second Assistant Surgeon in the Ordnance Medical Department and was attached to the Royal Artillery in 1830. In 1833 he was posted to the RA Hospital, Bermuda, where he made a valuable record of the islands at the time of the abolition of slavery. His topographical watercolours are held by the National Museum of Bermuda. Savage afterwards served in Corfu and rose to become Deputy Inspector General of Army Hospitals. He married in March 1841 Mary Lydia, eldest daughter of William Bonsey of Bellevue House, Slough. They had two sons, one an officer in the Royal Engineers and the other a clergyman.
