The subject is wearing the breast badge of an officer of the Legion d’Honneur awarded to him in 1806, and stands in front of a tree with his right hand resting on his distinctive neo-Grecian style dragoon helmet with black horsehair mane and leopard skin turban. His left hand rests on the curved sabre carried on campaign rather than the straight épée. To his far right stands his charger furnished with officer pattern horse furniture and shrabaque with embroidered with the number of the 15th Dragoons. The reverse applied with period manuscript label identifying the subject. Contained in period frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eJean-Pierre Ereuille (1768-1861) was born into the nobility of the ancien regime at St Secondin (Vienne) in southeastern France and entered the Revolutionary army as a sous-lieutenant in 1er Bataillon de la Vienne, at the time of the levée en masse of 1791 whereby all able-bodied men were called on to defend the nation as part of the developing ideology of the patriotic citizen. In August 1792 he transferred as a lieutenant to the 4th Dragoons and served in the German campaign of 1793-95. He was seconded to to the staff in Switzerland from 1797 until promoted squadron commander in the 4th Dragoons by Massena in 1799.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn 1801 he was stationed at Colmar, and married the following year Marie Anne Shultz, daughter François Antoine who was a contractor for the fortifications at Sélestat. They had three children, one of whom Antoine Hector Thésée Treuille de Beaulieu (1809–1885) became a General and renowned inventor of artillery weapons. Jean-Pierre was created Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur on 26 Prairial An XII while serving as a squadron commander in the 1st Cuirassiers. He was appointed to the 1st Horse Granadiers in 1805 and advanced in the Legion d’Honneur to\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eOfficier grade while serving in Austria in 1806.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn February 1807 his horse was killed under him at the Battle of Eylau - the notoriously bloody, strategically inconclusive clash in East Prussia between Napoleon’s Grande Armée and the Russians. His services were further rewarded in 1807 when he was appointed Colonel of the 15th Dragoons on 5 August, and in 1808 when he was received the title of Baron of the Empire which brought with it a grant of 4,000 francs drawn on property seized in Westphalia. In 1809 he commanded the 15th Dragoons in Spain and had his horse wounded under him, possibly in the allied counter offensive when Arthur Wellesley forced Marshal Soult to retreat from Portugal - ‘eu un cheval blessé sous lui le 19 mai 1809 devant Augo (ou Ango).’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eHe retired to Sélestat, eastern France, where he became Mayor in 1811-13. He was also commandant of Bouches-du-Rhône department from 1812 until placed on non-active duty with pay in 1818. According to one source his career totalled 36 years and 19 campaigns before retiring in 1825.
