Threequarter length portrait photograph of Guthrie’s portrait of Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig (1861-1928), Commander British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front from 1915-1918, in service dress uniform. Titles beneath: ‘Field Marshal Earl Haig of Bemesyde, KT, OM / From the portrait / painted for / The Royal & Ancient Golf Club / by Sir James Guthrie, RSA, 1922 / Reproduced by Drummond Young Edin.’ Signed in ink ‘J.Guthrie to the left; Haig to the right. Numbered No. 102 in pencil. Contained original glazed and veneered frame.

An avid golf enthusiast, Haig was captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, from 1920 to 1921.

The Edinburgh photographic firm W. Drummond Young & Son was founded by Edward Drummond Young and his father William, an artist and cabinet maker. Edward trained as a painter, spent some time in Paris and the United States of America, before returning home to found the photographic firm which first appeared in directories in 1897 ‘as Photo Specialists, Press Work, etc’. The business quickly established an international reputation.
