Silver. Rectangular case with rounded corners, the hinged lid engraved with a mermaid embracing a cartouche inscribed ‘J. Graham / H.M.S. Shannon / 1916 / Grand Fleet / Cruisers / Winners ERA’s Gig Race with a Naval Crown composed of alternate ships’ hulls and sails. Maker’s mark of William Neale. Hallmarked Birmingham 1915.’
H.M.S. Shannon was a Minotaur-class armoured cruiser. She served with the Home Fleet, as a cruiser squadron flagship and fought Battle of Jutland in May 1916.
