Silver mounted glass inkwell with hinged lid engraved with the Irish Guards cap star and inscribed ‘From Sir John Hall 1918’. Maker’s mark of Hukin & Heath. Hallmarked London 1895.
Colonel Sir John Richard Hall of Dunglass, (1865-1928), 9th Baronet, was the son of Lt.-Gen. Julian Hamilton Hall and Augusta Wilhelmina Louisa Fremantle. Educated at Eton and commissioned into the Coldstream Guards, he married Sophia Mary Oliver, daughter of Henry Duncan, in and rose to the rank of Major. During the First world War he served as Major in the 3rd Reserve Battalion, Irish Guards, training officers for which he was awarded a C.B.E. in 1919. He was appointed Regimental Lieutenant-Colonel in the Irish Guards 1918-19, and was the author of The Coldstream Guards in the Boer War. He succeeded as the 9th Baronet Hall, of Dunglass [N.S.,1687] in 1913.
