10cm (3.9in) x 14cm (5.5in)
Painted porcelain. Rectangular plaque with chamfered corners, painted with a gilt borders and wreath of olive branches flanking an oval portrait of The Duke of Wellington in uniform with Garter sash. Unmarked but probably Worcester, inscribed in red to verso 'Lord Wellington 1814’.
The present plaque celebrates the cessation of almost 20 years of war with France. It can be dated to Wellington’s investiture as a Knight of the Garter (4 March 1813) and before his elevation from Marquess of Wellington to a dukedom (3 May 1814). The olive branches indicate the brief return of peace following Napoleon’s defeat, abdication and exile to Elba (11 April 1814)
