He was the chairman of the family brewery in Burslem; an alderman of the town; a county councillor; and High Sheriff of Staffordshire as well as a supporter of many institutions around The Potteries. He joined he 1st Volunteer Battalion, North Staffordshires in 1880 and rose to be its commanding officer in 1900 with his headquarters at C Company’s Newcastle Street drill hall.
