28cm (11in) x 26cm (10.2in)
Watercolour on paper. An officer in review order uniform seated, half length, right arm draped over a chaise longue, wearing uniform, signed J.W. Child and inscribed 39 Bedford St, Strand. Image: 20.5 x 18.5cm. Contained in glazed gilt frame.
The combination of uniform and artist’s details indicate a date range of 1837 to 1844. The former date is determined by Childe’s occupancy of 39 Bedford Street, while the latter date is corresponds year the bell top shako was replaced by the Albert pattern shako in 1844. White facings and design of the shoulder belt plate suggest the sitter is an officer of 1st Battalion, 47th Foot, stationed in England and Ireland since its return from 1829 in India and posting to the Ionian Islands in 1850. The officer’s green wool ball tuft to the top edge of his shako and shoulder belt whistle and chains mark him out a Light Company officer.
