Maker’s date mark for 1946.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDuring the Second World War Maharaja Sir Umaid Singh’s Jodhpur State Forces were deployed in the Middle East, North Africa, and Italy. They included the Jodhpur Lancers who were converted from a horsed cavalry unit to a mechanized regiment for service in the Middle East where it protected the Anglo-Iranian oilfields. The Jodhpur Sardar Infantry formed part of the34th Indian State Forces Infantry Brigade and served in East Africa from June 1941 to March 1942. It afterwards moved to the Middle East and was assigned to the US 5th Army for the Salerno landings in September 1943. He ruled under the regency of his great uncle HH Maharaja Sir Pratap Singh of Idar State until 1923 when he was formally invested by the Viceroy Lord Reading. In 1922 he served as Aide-de-Camp to the Prince of Wales during his visit to India and the following year embarked on the construction of the Umaid Bhawan Palace bringing much needed employment to Jodphur. In 1925 Umaid Singh brought his all-conquering polo team to England giving rise to a golden age of domination by teams from Rajasthan.
