In 1792 during French Revolution some 700 Swiss Guards were killed in the Tuileries courtyard defending Louis XVI from a violent mob. In 1799 Napoleon moved his residence from the Petit Luxembourg to the Tuileries, as a more suitable setting for his imperial ambitions. The theatre (aka the Salle des Machines) underwent three substantial transformations: the first in 1763, when it was greatly reduced in size; the second in 1792-1793, when it was converted for use by the National Convention; and thirdly when Napoleon I commissioned a new theatre with a Neoclassical Empire Style interior by Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine. The Tuileries, as symbol of all that was working with royal and imperial rule was sacked by a mob the was during the Siege of Paris in 1870-71, when a mob from the Commune, set fire to it using petroleum, liquid tar and turpentine as accelerant. The palace burned for two days and thorougly gutted the place except for the southernmost part. The dome itself was blown up by explosives placed in the central pavilion and detonated by the converging fires. There remains demolished in 1883.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Armoury St James","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":57303473815925,"sku":null,"price":1400.0,"currency_code":"GBP","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0511\/7008\/3014\/files\/L1700005.jpg?v=1781784316","url":"https:\/\/armoury.co.uk\/products\/relic-of-the-tuilleries-palace-1808","provider":"The Armoury St James's","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
