Circa 1948

9 carat gold and enamel double sided cufflinks with chain link connections. The convex oval panels set with the arms of Princess Elizabeth within a lozenge and encircled by the Garter linked with those of the Duke of Edinburgh encircled by the Garter. Maker’s mark of HHP to the reverse for Royal warrant holder Henry Hodson Plante of 12 Bury Street, St James’s, London. Contained in later Plante morocco case.

The present cufflinks were commissioned to mark the installation of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, as Lady and Knight Companions of the Order of the Garter in 1948, along with thirteen other new Garter Knights. The occasion was further marked in July 1949 by George VI commissioning portraits of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in Garter robes from Sir Oswald Birley, MC, RA, ROI, (1880-1952).
