He was educated at St Paul’s School and studied art at the Slade and also in Académie Julien in Paris before being commissioned into The Buffs with whom he served at Singapore before the First World War. He was a skilled practitioner of drypoint and aquatint etching (see V\u0026amp;A E.237-1918). The St Pancras volunteers were ordered to France in early 1915 and disembarked at Le Harve on 10 March. On 25 September they formed part of the second wave attacking the southern side of Loos village. Collison-Morley was killed at the head of the battalion after being twice wounded, just before reaching the German trenches, according to his sister. He was thirty-seven. A lover of Shakespeare’s works, he thought ‘Henry V’ was the ideal soldier’s play. A copy of it was found on his body. Five days’s before\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ehis death he wrote ‘There is no hardship or terror or doubt that happens out here that Shakespeare does not touch on or give advice for.'\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe battalion encountered stiff opposition in Loos cemetery before pushing on to clear houses and cellars in the village. It ended the day at its final objective, the coal-mine winding gear known as 'Tower Bridge'. 1\/19th suffered the heaviest casualties in 47th Division that day (14 officers and 372 other ranks).
