Invitation dated ‘… Saturday the 18 June precisely …’ [1836]. Card: 8.2cm x 12cm. Framed and glazed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e1836 was the year artist William Salter chose to depict the banquet in his painting that now hangs in Apsley House. It was also the only year in which King William IV and King William II of Holland attended. Colonel Parkinson was the subject of a preliminary portrait by Salter now in the National Portrait Gallery (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/portraitExtended\/mw04872\/Edward-Parkinson\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eNPG 3742\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e). He served with the 33rd under Colonel the Hon. Arthur Wellesley (afterwards 1st Duke of Wellington) in India. Promoted Captain in 1805, he served as as Deputy Adjutant General at the capture of the island of Bourbon (1809-10), becoming Brevet Major in 1811 and Major in 1813. In the latter year, having returned home with the 33rd, he served with his regiment in the Low Countries, including the attack on Merxcem, Antwerp, and Bergen-op-Zoom where he was wounded. He was second-in-command of the 33rd at Waterloo, where he was severely wounded at Quatre Bras and made brevet lieutenant-colonel. Placed on half-pay in September 1817, he was made CB in July 1831, and granted a distinguished service reward in November 1849. He attained the rank of lieutenant-general and was Colonel-in-Chief of the 93rd Highlanders from December 1852 until his death at Pall Mall, London, on 14 January 1858.
