Height overall: 16.5cm (6.5in)

Silver. Cast and hammered portrait bust modelled by Georges Weil, mounted on a white marble base. Height of bust: 8.3cm (3.1in). Maker’s mark of NB for Nathaniel Bloom & Sons, Bond Street, London W1. Hallmarked London 1972.

Georges Weil was born in Vienna in 1938 and arrived in England on the eve of the Second World War. He attended St. Martins in the mid 1950s and pursued a successful career designing jewellery in 1960s London. His interest in small scale sculpture made from precious metals and an admiration for Churchill combined to produce this miniature portrait mark the century of Churchill’s birth. Weil sold his jewellery studio in 1979 to devote more time to sculpture and painting. In 1989 he immigrated to Israel, where he is a prominent artist.
