A Central Press photograph in the National Portrait Gallery archives shows the Bohemian looking figure of sculptor C. Tim Brown in the act of sculpting this wartime portrait of the Prime Minister in characteristically dogged pose. The photograph was published in November 1940 in a broad spectrum of the press ranging from the Daily Mirror to Tatler, perhaps reflecting the Churchill’s appeal across the classes. Cecil Brown aka C. Tim Brown was a winner of the Prix de Rome, an exhibitor at the Royal Academy and a pupil of R.J. Emerson of the British School at Rome Faculty of Sculpture before the war but thereafter vanished from view.
