Bulletin No.67

Few names are more recognisable in the pantheon of 20th century political figures than that of Lloyd-George. Thus we are pleased to open our latest Bulletin with an offering from the Lloyd-George family archive of Government Despatch boxes. Leading the pack is the prime ministerial 'First Lord of the Treasury' despatch box used by the Great War leaders HH Asquith and David Lloyd-George. Red Cabinet level despatch boxes used by Major Gwilym Lloyd-George when holding the critical Second World War ministerial portfolio for ‘Fuel and Power’ and later for ‘Food’ in Churchill’s third ministry tick the boxes of the historically significant and aesthetically pleasing.

Moreover, in a new departure for the ASJ, we are excited to have been selected as the sole outlet for a new perfectly-sized  bronze Churchill bust created as part of a landmark equestrian statue for Blenheim Palace. The sculptor Tristram Lewis (b.1964) has produced this characterful portrait head as part of a major project to create the only mounted sculpture of Churchill. The project is enthusiastically supported by His Grace the Duke of Marlborough and it is fully intended that the resultant equestrian statue will be sited in the park at Blenheim Palace.

Royal Artillery Militia Field Officer’s Charger, 1860

The equestrian theme continues on the website update with a good 19th century oil on canvas portrait of a Royal Artillery Militia officer’s charger, and a fine equestrian bronze of a turn-of-the-nineteenth century officer of the Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars Yeomanry. The Raj is neatly bookended from its beginnings by a pair of 18th century studies of a subedar of the Madras Army to its demise in a group of princely presentation portraits. For the maritime minded we shouldn’t forget to mention our mariner’s fid - a relic of the USS Essex and a single-ship action of the War of 1812.
