Silver. Wine coasters, with pierced and beaded rim, inset turned wood base, with silver boss engraved with the badge of the 4th/7th Dragoon Guards, inscribed around the lower outer rim in script ‘Presented to Lieutenant-Colonel H.R.S. Pain by the Officers 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards on his relinquishing Command 1964’. Maker’s mark of Mappin & Webb. Hallmarked London 1963.

Sir Rollo Pain was Colonel of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards from 1979 to 1983. He won the Military Cross for his part in fierce fighting for an SS held village in Germany in 1945. He was latterly Head of the British Defence Staff in Washington, 1975-78.

Colonel Carding was pivotal in the veterinary care of Military Working Horse (MWH) Sefton (1963–1993) after he was critically injured in the 1982 the Hyde Park bombing.
