The steel breastplate forged and decorated in the Royal manufactory of Arms at Klingenthal in Alsace, centrally applied with sun burst and eagle stamped inside lower rim engraved ‘Manufre Rle de Klingenthal 1828’; the backplate with steel edging and brass studs, and similarly engraved to the interior ‘Manufre. Rale de Klingenthal Sepbre 1827’, the whole complete with shoulder scales in the form of a double-row of brass curb-chain, and a leather waist-strap.
The Carabiniers-à-Cheval were the senior heavy cavalry regiments in the French army, rose to prominence during the Napoleonic Wars. The distinctive cuirass was introduced in 1809. With the reorganisation of the army after the fall of Napoleon Carabiniers were disbanded Two regiments of Carabiniers were re-raised in 1824 under Charles X.
