Ceramic. Designed by Ernest Bailey for Burgess & Leigh of Burslem, circa 1941, produced in a multi-tone colour way.

Titled Victory, the inscription on the plinth “…- ” spells out the morse code for “V”.  Ernest Bailey was a principal designer and modeller at Burgess and Leigh during the mid 20th century. He produced two wartime pieces for Burgess and Leigh which amply expressed the characteristics associated with Churchill.

This jug was the first to associate Churchill with his famous wartime ‘V for Victory’ sign. So successful was this design that the jug was reproduced in 1965 as a commemorative issue. The firm of Burgess and Leigh was bought by the Dorling family in 1999, who again re-issued the jug. These later issues are recognisable from the back stamps ‘1965’ and the letters ‘BDL’ for Burgess Dorling & Leigh, respectively.
