Overall: 73cm (28.7in) x 50cm (19.7in)

Mezzotint. Full length, standing on a rocky shore looking forward, in Rear-Admiral’s uniform with stars and sashes of the Orders of the Bath, Neapolitan St Ferdinand and Turkish Crescent, and naval gold medals for St Vincent ad the Nile, right sleeve pinned. Anonymous engraver after John Hoppner RA. Contained in Hogarth glazed frame.

This popular image was first engraved by Charles Turner after Hoppner’s painting for the Prince of Wales’s Carlton House residence. In the original painting of 1801 Hoppner depicted the Battle of Copenhagen in the background. However in Turner’s mezzotint of 1806 and this example the background scene depicts Trafalgar.
