Overall: 25cm (9.7) x 17cm (6.7in)
Sepia toned three quarter length portrait Prince Albert in Midshipman’s uniform, with left hand on the hilt of his dirk. Contained in original glazed period frame with gilt slip and easel backed Morocco frame by Edwards & Sons, 159 Regent Street, London.
Prince Albert (afterwards Duke of York, and King George VI, reigned 1936-1952) was rated midshipman aboard the flagship of the 1st Battle Squadron HMS Collingwood in September 1913. Known to his fellow officers as Mr. Johnson, Prince Albert was mentioned in despatches for his actions as a Sub-Lieutenant in ‘A’ turret during the Battle of Jutland (31 May–1 June 1916), the indecisive action that was to prove the heaviest naval engagement of the war.
