London Gazette 11th January 1918.
Extract from the 8/SW Borderers War Diary 08/05/1917: 'The 8th SWB received orders to raid the enemy’s trenches at 0.6 and thus divert their attention from our right and left and so enable the flanks to make big attack…At 21.25hrs the raiding party under the command of Captain Dickie left the wire outside our trenches in two bodies…Immediately on leaving the wire & crossing CLAW RAVINE to the left bank they were subjected to a heavy barrage of Trench Mortars & timed High Explosives. Unable to take cover on account of wasting time Captain DICKIE pushed on as fast as possible suffering several casualties including the 2 bombing NCOs. The enemy wire was excellently cut and both parties had no difficulty in entering the enemy trenches from the right and left which were badly knocked about & not on the average more than 4’ deep – The bombing parties led by Privates (ADAMS and PRICE) now in a splendid manner moved to left & right about 80yds & 60yds respectively, they met with practically no resistance but had several bombs thrown at them, after about 10 minutes the signal to leave the trenches was given by Capt DICKIE with 2/Lt CARDWELL & the above mentioned ADAMS and PRICE being the last to leave – On reaching JUMEAUX RAVINE the signal was fired for our barrage to fall on the enemy’s trenches – both parties retired through another heavy barrage suffering more casualties.'
