Captain Beauchamp Henry Selby (1882-1914), 1st Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, was a noted hunter, boxer, and the proud owner of a enormous dog. The oldest son of landed Northumberland family. His great grandfather, also an officer of the 5th Fusiliers was a distinguished early settler in Canada, and his grandfather a renowned ornithologist. Beauchamp was born in London, educated at Harrow School and Sandhurst and commissioned into the Northumberland Fusiliers in 1901. He served the on the North-West Frontier in 1908, taking part in the operations in the Mohmand country. On the outbreak of the First World War he went to France with British Expeditionary Force and was shot on 20 September 1914 near Vailly, during the Battle of the Aisne. He died from his wounds next day. His loss was greatly lamented. His Colonel wrote: “... Your son was one of the lion-hearted breed that are such a power in the regt. At the fight at Fromieres, the day after Mons, he did very gallant work under a heavy fire to the great admiration of the O.C. 1st Lincolnshire Regt. with whom he was temporarily detailed…’
