Silver. A pair of menu holder modelled as the Royal Sussex Regiment badge.

Garter Star and motto ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense’ (May he be shamed who thinks badly of it), over the Rousillon plume, all raised on a circular foot, inscribed with presentation inscription from Lieutenant A.P. Mark-Wardlaw. Maker’s mark of John Chapple and John Mantle. Hallmarked London 1897.

Major Alfred Penrose Mark Wardlaw (1868-1917) was the son of the British consul in the Kingdom of Granada. He was born in Málaga, Spain and educated at Radley College. In 1892 he was commissioned into the Royal Sussex Regiment from the militia and retired as a Captain in 1900. He rejoined his regiment on the outbreak of the First World War and went to France in 1915 with the rank of acting Major in the 9th (Service) Battalion, 24th Division. He died of wounds received in action 1917 and is commemorated by a shield bearing his arms in the Hall at his alma mater.
