Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby, KB (1734-1801) delivered the first land victory over Revolutionary France at Battle of Alexandria on 21 March 1801 which followed on from the Nelson’s victory at the Nile of 1-3 August 1798. It led to the French being driven out of Egypt and Syria. Abercromby, was fatally wounded during the encounter by a musket ball which could not be extracted. He continued fighting until victory was secured but died some days later (28 March) aboard HMS Foudroyant.
