Silver cigar box with glazed lid containing an officer’s full dress pouch flap of scarlet cloth edged with Russia braid, the centre embroidered in gold and silver bullion wire with the Royal Crest, a harp, and the regimental motto ‘Pristinae virtutis memores’ (Mindful of their former valour), to either side shamrock sprays and battle honour scrolls - ‘Leswarree’, ‘Hindoostan’, ‘Alma’, ‘Balaclava’, ‘Inkerman’, ‘Sevastopol’, ‘Central India’, ’Afghanistan’ and ‘South Africa 1900-2’. The silver box cedar lined and bearing the maker’s mark of Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Ltd., 112 Regent Street, London. Gross weight 35.5oz. Hallmarked 1937.
The present cigar box’s follows an informal tradition of recycling the silver and other decorative elements of a cavalry officer’s uniform into items of practical domestic use.
