Following Kenyan Independence in 1963, the soldiers of 11th Kenya Rifles (formerly 11th King’s Aftrican Rifles) were awaiting the announcement of a pay rise in a speech by Jomo Kenyatta due to be televised on 24 January 1964. When the Prime Minister failed to appear, a group of disgruntled riflemen mutinied. Kenyatta's government appealed to British troops to restore order and at length held courts-martial for 43 soldiers. In the aftermath 11th Kenya Rifles was disbanded and a new battalion, 1st Kenya Rifles, was created from 340 soldiers who had been cleared of participation in the mutiny by the Kenyan CID.
