Khaki glaze ceramic British bulldog modelled with Tam O’Shanter and haversack. Produced by Royal Doulton in tan colour way under model number ‘HN153 Large’. Printed registration number 663408 to the base.

On active service since 1917 this British bulldog was the Scottish equivalent of Doulton’s tin hatted bulldog ‘Old Bill HN146’ which was based on the popular cartoon character created by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1959). Old Bill, an elderly, pipe-smoking British ‘Tommy’ with a walrus moustache, was based on a lance-corporal from Birmingham who was killed in the same action that saw the Bairnsfather invalided from the Western Front in April 1915.
